ROCKFORD, IOWA - Aalar M. Hirv, 75, of Rockford, Iowa, died April 8, 2015, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on April 18, in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with lunch to follow at the Zion Lutheran Church. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider memorials to the Fossil Prairie Park in Rockford.

Aalar was born in Voru, Estonia, on January 9, 1940, the second son of Ernst and Armilde Hirv. His mother died when he was two years old and he was raised by his father and grandmother until his father remarried to Aliede Saar in 1954 at Rockford.

In 1944 the Hirv family abandoned their ancestral home fleeing the Soviet invasion of Estonia. Their flight took them to Augsburg, Germany, where they lived in a Displaced Persons Camp until 1949 when the Lutheran Church sponsored their immigration to the United States. They were naturalized citizens and became permanent residents of Rockford, Iowa.

Aalar graduated from the Rockford High School in 1959. He received his Master's in Education from Mankato State University. His first teaching position was in Lake Mills and then spent the rest of his teaching career at Madison Elementary School in Mason City. He remained at Madison until his retirement in 1997, serving hundreds of students.

He was very adept at woodworking and gardening. In his early years he could be found hunting geese, ducks and pheasants and that led to his hobby of raising them. His greatest pursuit was fishing in the rivers, trout streams and lakes in the North Iowa area.

Those surviving Aalar are his son Alex and wife Tammie Hirv, of Rockford and their three children Katie, Mac and Seth Hirv; his brother Eino and his wife Myrna Hirv of Virginia and many co-workers and friends.

His parents and stepmother preceded Aalar in death.

Arrangements are through Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 302 W. Main, Rockford, IA 50468, 641-756-3311, or 641-423-8676, www.Fullertonfh.com , Facebook/Fullertonfuneralhome.
