Joyce was united in marriage to Alfred Blackburn and the couple made their home in Charles City and wintered in Texas. This union was blessed with four children: Carl, Marilee, James and Karen. Years after Alfred's death, she was united in marriage to Bill Nelson. Joyce gained three daughters and a host of other family members from this union. They made their home in Charles City for half the year and Arizona for the other half. Joyce was involved in childcare for several years and loved her job and "adopted" grandchildren very much.

She attended church at the Community of Christ in Clear Lake and First Wesleyan Church in Charles City and was also a member of the Eastern Star. Joyce was a very outgoing person who enjoyed rock and shell collecting, crafts of all kinds, traveling, puzzles and games. She loved spending time with her family while camping and fishing.

Living family members include her son, James (Dianne) Blackburn; daughter, Karen (Bob) Clark; son-in-law, Don Groesbeck; two step-daughters: Barbara Carpenter and Marilyn Cahill; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; along with several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Alfred and Bill; son, Carl; daughter, Marilee Groesbeck; step-daughter, Sharon Clark; and great-granddaughter, Bailey Anne Blackburn.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Charles City YMCA.
