DeWayne Clarence Meyer, the son of Clarence and Pauline (Zimmer) Meyer, was born September 23, 1937 in Charles City. He was raised and educated in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School.

At the age of 9, Dewie began working at Guthart Bros. sweeping floors, packing potatoes in sacks so they could be sold and pop cans in bags. He worked his way through delivering groceries and hard work to become the head meat cutter. After the tornado, Dewie joined the fire department in Charles City and did a lot of public speaking, especially to children, about fire safety. He held the position of Fire Chief for a few years before retiring. While he was a firefighter, he worked part-time in the meat department at Hy-Vee and drove cement truck for Allied Redi-Mix.

Dewie was united in marriage to Darlene Meyers on October 16, 1955 at the First Congregational Church in Charles City. This union was blessed with three children: Dawn, Denise and Dan.

Dewie was a member of the First Congregational Church in Charles City. He enjoyed watching sports on television, playing football and golfing. He also played fast pitch softball on the Salsbury Labs team and with other teams in Charles City.

Dewie really loved being able to watch the girls softball teams throughout the years, but in recent years, he and Darlene supported their granddaughters in their high school and college sports careers. Dewie was also a bowler, liked to go trout fishing and going out to eat in Florida. His pride and joy was being able to drive his golf cart throughout the community he and Darlene were members of down in Florida.

Living family members include his wife of nearly 60 years, Darlene of Charles City; three children: Dawn (Greg) Bray of Ionia, Denise (Al) Lampman of Waterloo and Dan (Diane) Meyer of Charles City; three granddaughters: Morgan Meyer Jensen (Matt), Kelsey Lampman (fiancé Chris Holm) and Kirby Meyer; great-grandson, Jacob Jensen; brother, Roger Meyer of Davenport; two sisters-in-law: Myrna (Lyle) Schlader of Charles City and Shirley Weiss (friend Gordon Kettleson) of Charles City; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; and brother-in-law, Chuck Weiss.
