CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Elizabeth E. “Bettie” Garthwaite, 91, of 300 Kelly St. in Charles City, died Sunday (Jan. 1, 2006) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. in Greene. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene.

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Elizabeth E. Bettie Garthwaite, 91, of Charles City, died Sunday, January 1, 2006, at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.

She was born July 13, 1914, in Charles City, the daughter of Guy and Edna Beckwith Martin. On June 11, 1935, she married Paul Edwin Garthwaite in Charles City. He died May 29, 1999.

Mrs. Garthwaite received her education in the Charles City public schools, graduating in 1931. After high school she performed in a vaudeville troupe. In 1947 she and her husband established Garthwaite Printing Company Office Supplies and Stationery, which she diversified into a gift shop in 1957, and operated until retiring in 1972. The couple spent their retirement years traveling throughout the United States, spending their winters in Pensacola, Florida.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed entertaining guests in her home and going out for dinner with close friends of the family. She also was instrumental in the beginning of the Charles City Little Theater Group.

Survivors include a son, Martin Tim (Donna) of Charles City; two grandsons, Jeffery (Kristi) Garthwaite of Richmond, Va., and Paul G. (Deb) Garthwaite of Fountain, Colo.; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Hannah, Leah and Ryan.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Reids Funeral Chapel, Greene, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Memorials may be directed to Bettie Garthwaite Memorial Fund in care of the family at 411 Howard St., Charles City 50616.
