CLARKSVILLE, IOWA - Leland 'Red' Metz, age 80, of Clarksville was born April 11, 1934, the son of William Jay and Martha (Shultz) Metz in Rockford. He received his education at Marble Rock School graduating in 1951.

On Sept. 28, 1963, Leland "Red" Metz married Janice Calease at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. They lived in Clarksville their entire married life.

Red served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1952-1955. He was a lifetime member of Clarksville AMVET Post No. 30. Red was employed at John Deere in Waterloo from 1952 until 1991 when he retired.

Red was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He had served on the church council, played on the Dart Ball Team, helped with the annual BBQ dinner, ushered with his sons and enjoyed helping at the Fall Bazaar Auction.

Red died at home Monday, November 3, 2014.

He is preceded in death by his father and stepmother, William Jay (Wanita) Metz; his mother and stepfather, Martha Shultz (Milton) Humke; sister, Donna Funnell; and father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Ella Calease.

Red is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janice of Clarksville; three sons, Mike (Lynn) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Steve (Carol) of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Rodney of Madrid; one daughter, Rachel of Rosemount, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Anthony, Vincent, Stephanie, Tyler, Trevor, Lauren, Elizabeth, and Trenton; two nephews, Larry Uhlenhopp and Ricky Uhlenhopp; two nieces, Diane Rhoads and Janet Mitchell; five brothers-in-law, Dean Calease, Dale (Ellen) Calease, Lloyd (Patricia) Calease, Leland (Patty) Calease, and Jerry (Kathy) Calease; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Richard) Dirksen, and Shirley (Dan) Clark; and a large extended family.

Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial at Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, 319-278-4245, and 1 hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church & Cedar Valle Hospice.
