Adam Eugene "Gene" Schreier, the son of Adam Ferdinand and Mary (Phelps) Schreier, was born November 30, 1924, on a farm near Dell Rapids, South Dakota, the third of four children. He received his education in country schools and graduated from St. Mary's Academy High School on May 26, 1942.

Gene entered military service on December 7, 1942. He served in Europe and received the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, The Occupation Medal and The Good Conduct Medal. Gene was awarded two battle stars; The Rhineland and Central Europe. He was discharged from the United States Army on April 6, 1946.

Gene then attended the University of South Dakota and received a B.A. in Government and a minor in law. He was employed in Denver for a time before being called back to the Army. Gene served his country once again as a director of troops and communications officer before being discharged.

He then worked for the Commercial Investment Trust Company and met Elaine Jean Soli. The two were married on August 6, 1954, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Gene resigned his job with C.I.T. in Des Moines to accept the fifth grade teaching position with the Charles City School System on August 18, 1957. He received his Master's Degree in School Administration from Drake University on August 15, 1963. Gene was the principal at Floyd Elementary (until it closed) and at Lincoln Elementary from 1968-1993 until his retirement.

He and Elaine remained in Charles City and according to Elaine, "Gene was called all of the time to substitute teach." He took great pride in helping whenever he was able.

Gene was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he taught Catechism for over 30 years. He also volunteered with the National Guard for many years and volunteered countless hours at the Floyd County Museum in Charles City. Gene was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, American Legion, and V.F.W. He loved sports, especially the Charles City Comets softball team.

Living family members include his children: Michael (Vicky) Schreier of Lexington, Kentucky, Teresa (David) Bennett of Cedar Rapids, Lance Schreier of Charles City and Tim Schreier of Hoboken, New Jersey; two grandchildren: Travis and Ryan Bennett; sister, Marietta (Stanley) Nelson of Brookings, South Dakota; niece, Sherry (Dale) Sovell of Ivanhoe, Minnesota and their two children; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
