CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Thomas “Thom” Frerichs, 49, of Charles City died Thursday, October 30, 2014, as the result of an automobile accident.

A celebration of his life will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Hauser Funeral Home. Family sharing will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas "Thom" Frerichs, 49, of Charles City, died Thursday, October 30, 2014 as the result of an automobile accident.

The family invites everyone to a celebration of Thom's life at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2014. A time of family sharing will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Thomas Craig Frerichs, the son of James and Bonnie (Cuvelier) Frerichs, was born November 26, 1964 in Waterloo. He attended school in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1983. Thom continued his education at NIACC, UNI (receiving a degree in elementary education) and later started graduate school at UNI, but did not complete it due to illness.

He was a teacher in San Antonio, Texas for two years, a counselor in Minneapolis, Minnesota for one year, worked at Comprehensive Systems in Charles City for about four years, worked at the Francis Lauer shelter in Mason City for one year and Opportunity Village in Clear Lake for one year. Thom volunteered countless hours with the Department of Human Services in Charles City for almost 15 years.

Thom was a member of the First Congregational Church in Charles City. He loved music, music and more music. He was always proud of attending numerous concerts despite his disability, "I might be disabled, but I have seen them all." Thom also enjoyed gardening, flowers, plants and the positive aspects of politics. He had numerous friends in Charles City who always looked out for him, but Thom especially loved going to First Citizens National Bank and visiting all of his very special friends.

Living family members include his parents, Jim and Bonnie Frerichs of Cape Coral, Florida; brother, Terry (LaRae) Frerichs of Charles City; niece, Stacy (Bobby) Manhetter; two nephews: Jesse (Alison) Frerichs and Adam (Megan) Sears; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his guide dog, Hannah.
