St. John Evangelical Lutheran ChurchDr. Paul Ernest Maland of Charles City, Iowa, died Sunday, October 26, 2014, in the Riverside Senior Living at the age of 98.
Funeral services for Paul Maland will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Paul, the son of Elias and Hilda (Holm) Maland of Kanawha, Iowa, was born January 7, 1916, during World War I. Paul was the baby of this family of eight children. The Maland family grew up in this predominately Norwegian immigrant farm country in North Central Iowa where the St. John's Lutheran Church served as a center of their family and community lives. Paul proudly remembers his father as one of the most progressive farmers of the area - "a steward of the land, well ahead of his time."
Graduating from Kanawha High School in 1932 and from Iowa State Veterinary College in 1937 - Paul established his vet practice in 1940 in Charles City - home of the beautiful (and often raging) Cedar River. With bride Maxine (Wicks) Maland at his side, they raised five children known as the 5 J's - and celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary in 2005.
What a challenge for us - the 5 J's - to try to summarize his life, his long legacy. No worry! One year ago, he scribbled down thoughts for his obituary. Always a planner, living with intention, putting his house in order like a good Norski.
His own reflections centered around being thankful - like the picture "Grace" hanging on his wall - of the old man with bowed head. He was thankful for being raised on the farm; for the natural world around him; for his family, the animals, the Norwegian church and community; for the opportunity to go to college; for marriage to Maxine - "the crowning achievement of my life"; for a half-century vet practice which he regarded as a service to the farmers and community; for his other community service to Little League, St. John Lutheran soloist and choir member, Hospice volunteer, activities in the Elks and Lions and the Charles City "Y" . And he was most grateful for his family, for being involved in the lives of his sons, daughters, 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Sitting beside Paul's heart of gratitude, was his raucous laughter, his ever-present expression of joy, his ever - ready sense of humor and his acts of kindness and compassion. He enjoyed fishing and sports of all kinds throughout his life. Flowing through his zest for living was a quiet stream, contemplation and a deep stillness of spirit. Always learning, always critically questioning the larger world he lived in, he once proclaimed, "I'd be sunk without books."
We celebrate the well-lived life of this inspiring man, Paul Maland, who always sang his own song of the simple, the natural, the just. From all of us and his wider community, we give thanks for the gift of his life.
Paul is survived by daughters, Judy and her husband, Kip Hauser of Charles City, and their children, Laurie, Rebecca, and Stephen; Janet and her husband, Roger Hanson of Fenton, MO, and their children, Kristen and Kurt: Jeanine Maland of Asheville, NC, and her daughter, Molly Maland; sons, Jim Maland of Brattleboro, VT, and children, Emily and Tyler and their mother, K.D. Maynard; Jerry Maland and his wife, Jane of Harrison, AR, and their children, Justin, Jenny, Jeff and Jessica; twelve grandchildren and their spouses and families and eighteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine in 2006 and seven brothers and sisters.
The family suggests memorials to St. John Lutheran Church (Coats for Kids) & Ministerial Fuel Fund, YMCA, The Learning Center(TLC), Elks, and SNAP (Spay Neuter All Pets), or a charity of your choice.
