John was always very ambitious during his high school years. He delivered the Des Moines Register, mowed yards, shoveled snow, worked in gas stations and painted houses, as well as barns. He joined the US Army and was stationed at Fort Hancock in the radar unit.

When the war was over, he was honorably discharged in 1945. On September 14, 1945 he was joined in holy matrimony to Louise Milloy. In his career he worked for two companies in Ohio. He was President of Inland Mansfield Tire Company and also held the position of Vice Chairman and CEO of Union Fork and Hoe Tool Company. After retiring in 1985, he bought a cattle ranch south of Des Moines where he lived until 1997 when he and Louise sold it and moved to Old Farm Road in Mason City.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister.
