APACHE JUNCTION, ARIZONA - Hugh Patrick Cooling, 83, of Apache Junction, Arizona, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014, at his home.

Hugh was born July 21, 1931, in Nora Springs, the son of Francis W. and Rose Aileen (Coyle) Cooling. He graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1949 and later enlisted in the Navy serving in Korea during the war. He was honorably discharged in 1953 at Naval Air Station, San Diego, California.

Hugh was united in marriage to Della Billings, formerly of Mason City. He later married Velma Gilman of Mason City. Hugh worked in the farming industry, utility construction, and maintenance business. Hugh was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 208 in Rockwell, a member of VFW Post 7968 Apache Junction, Arizona, was a member of both the Eagles and Moose Lodge. Hugh served in a number of different positions within these organizations, but was most notably known for his dedicated and honorable service with the American Legion Honor Guard in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents; wife Della in 1964; wife Velma in 2005; brother Bill in 2013, and brother-in-law Jerry Gleason in 2011.

Survivors include lifetime friend and companion Ruth Ward of Apache Junction, Arizona; son Anthony Cooling and wife Uli of Lacey, Washington; son Tim Cooling and wife Kim of Thornton; daughter Tami Anderson and husband Jeff of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren Daniel Cooling and wife Ericka of Shelton, Washington; Christina Reid and husband Danny of Kent, Washington; Dustin Cooling and wife Ashley of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; Chris McDowell and wife Angie of Thornton; Jenifer Flowers and husband Nick of Lincoln, Nebraska; Bob McDowell of Clear Lake; Cody Anderson and wife Brittney of Flower Mound, Texas; Rebecca Anderson of McKinney, Texas; six great-grandchildren; sister Ann Weiner and husband Frank of Nora Springs; brother Don Cooling and wife Marilyn of Montrose, Colorado; brother Jerry Cooling and wife Phyllis of Mason City; sister-in-law Pearl Cooling of Montrose, Colorado; sister Kay Gleason of Mason City; sister Judy Connor and husband Jerry of Belmond; brother-in-law Jerry Gilman and wife Marilyn of Everett, Washington; sister-in-law Eileen King and husband Dennis of Grand Island, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at the American Legion Post 208 in Rockwell.
