ANOTHER TRAGEDY

CLYDE SCOTT Found Dead on The River This Morning
--------------
Terrible Blow to an Aged Father and a Shock to Our Community
--------------
This morning about 7:30 o’clock the people were quite startled to see Sam Pickett come down after the coroner. The news soon spread that one of the Scott boys had been found dead near the boat-houses. Dr. Knickerbocker, the coroner, went at once, followed by a large crowd.

The body was found in a boat which had drifted up to the pasture back of the fair ground, where it had lodged in some reeds on the east shore. He lay in the stern of the boat, with his hands clasped over his head, his elbows on the side of the boat and his feet crossed, evidently as he lay down. The supposition is that he untied the boat pushed it from the shore, laid down in it, and the boat drifted away, as the oars had been left at the house.

This morning, S.S. Scott, father of the young man, found the boat missing and started to look for it. Someone told him that the boat had drifted up the river, and he went after it, He soon discovered it and was terrified to find his son Clyde, lying in the stern of the boat. He left it undisturbed, and returned to the house, when his eldest son Charles went up the river and brought the boat down.

The coroner was already on the grounds, and made a hasty examination of the body, which was rigid in death. The doctor said that in his opinion the boy had been dead for hours. The body was taken home, where it was stripped and again examined. No marks of foul play were found on his body. There were no contusions, to indicate a fall of any kind. No one of the family knew of any symptoms of heart disease that had ever shown. In his pockets were found some money, a knife, some letters and a bank-book.

Clyde left the house last night about eight o’clock, and as late as nine p.m. he was seen on Main Street, and when last seen was walking in the direction of the river. When he left home last night he told his father that he was going out, and said not to worry about him. After he had been gone for some time Mr. Scott sent his son Charlie after him. Thinking he had gone down town. Of course he was not found as he had probably long before gone down to the boat, where it was moored by the side of the steamer. This boat was seen last night by David Kitcherer at 10 p.m. seemingly fastened to the little island at the first bend above the dam.

Clyde K. Scott was born in this city in 1871, and was about twenty four years of age. He was a cooper, by trade, and had been, for the summer, at Nashua running a cooper shop.

His death is a terrible blow to Mr. Scott and family, who have the sympathy of everybody in the city.

Later: -- A postmortem examination by Coroner Knickerbocker and Dr. Amos was held this afternoon, when it was found that deceased came to his death from enlargement of the heart. The valves leading to the heart were ruptured, and filled with clotted blood, this completely destroying the circulation. The heart was enlarged, and in a soft, deceased condition, generally. An examination; of the stomach destroyed all theories advanced that he had taken poison of any kind.

[Unable to read last sentence. Looks like it may say, Rest of body to be in good condition.]
