Gary was born in Charles City in 1937, the son of Hoyle and DeAlda Ginther. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1955. After high school, Gary ventured to California and Colorado and his love of horses grew while in Colorado. Gary returned to Iowa with his horse Major Starr in tow and at one point Gary and Starr went to Texas to roping school, where they practiced on sheep and then entered a few rodeo competitions. Starr lived to be 28 years old and all of Gary’s children rode the ‘gentle giant.' Gary will always be a cowboy at heart.

Gary returned to farming with his father on the family farm, which included custom farming and raising various cattle breeds. In 2013, the last herd of Charolais were sold, the pasture stood empty and the cows were sorely missed. Gary continued to farm right up to planting this spring.

Gary was always generous with others in need and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with friends over a cold one at the local watering holes.

In 1958, Gary was united in marriage to Sharon (Lohr) Ginther. To this union three children were born, Marty, Scott and Laurie. Later, Gary was married to Sadie Adams.

Those surviving Gary include his two sons Marty and his wife LeAnn Ginther, and Scott Ginther and special friend Debbie, all of Rockford; his daughter Laurie and her husband Kevin Carlson, Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren Colter (Sheldon) Ginther, Cory (Megan) Ginther, Lacey (Kyle) Waller, Toni (Anthony) Bradford, Tyler (Gabrielle) Ginther, Johnnie (Erin) Riser; great-grandchildren McKenzie, Callie, Caleb, Silas, TyRone, Toniah, Anthony, Toni, Liv, Carson, Maddison and Skyler; sister Marilynne Gossett, Grand Junction, Colorado; and special friend and companion Sadie Ginther.

His parents preceded him in death.
