Jacob Engebritsen Knudson was born February 10, 1852 at Vike, Hordaland, Norway to Engebrigt Knutsen Vike and Kari Ivarsdatter Aure, the fourth of their five children.

Not soon after birth, Jacob emigrated to Wisconsin with his parents and siblings leaving Norway on May 15, 1852 and arriving at New York City on July 16, 1852. The family traveled on the ship "Bjorgiven". They then traveled over land to arrive in Wisconsin and a few years later, moved to Mitchell County, Iowa.

Found in the 1870 census at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa: Ing Canuteson 47, Carrie 60, Canute 23, Iver 22, Nelse 19, Jacob 16, Allen 14.

Jacob married Ida Melinda Hardman (Ida born January 4, 1860 at Green, Iowa) on June 1, 1876 at Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa.

The couple had 6 children:
Pearl Lillian (b 1877 Rock Grove, Floyd, Iowa);

David Engebrigt (b Sep 27, 1878 Rock Grove, Floyd, Iowa);

Jacob W. (b Nov 1880 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa);

Hattie Ruth (b Nov 24, 1888 Manly, Worth, Iowa);

Arthur Jay (b Feb 4, 1891 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa) and

Winifred Lucille (b July 18, 1899 Spencer, Clay, Iowa).

Found in the 1895 census at Scott, Hamilton, Iowa: Jacob Knudson age 42.

Found in the 1900 census at Jewell, Hamilton, Iowa: J E Knudson 48, Ida Knudson 40, J W Knudson 19, Hattie Knudson 11, Arthur Knudson 9, Lucil Knudson 10 mos.

After Ida's death, Jacob married Emma Wilhelmina Herbster (Herbeter?)on August 1906 at Milford, Clay, Iowa. (Emma born March 8, 1867 Ackley, Franklin, Iowa). They had 1 son, George Willard (born 1907 Milford, Clay, Iowa).

Found in the 1920 census at Spencer, Clay, Iowa: J E Knudson 67, Emma Knudson 52, Lida Weise 37, Williard Knudson 9, Lucille Knudson 19.

Besides farming, Jacob served terms as mayor of Spencer, Iowa and Milford Iowa.

Jacob Knudson died September 22, 1924 at Spencer, Clay, Iowa and was buried September 1924 at the Rock Grove Township Cemetery, Rock Grove, Floyd, Iowa.
