Ex-Postmaster at Geneva Dies

Geneva - Funeral services for Alfred E.P. Gillette, 78, former postmaster and barber at Geneva for many years, were held at the Methodist church Saturday, the Rev. Roger Tappmeyer officiating. Burial was at Rockford.

He was born in Mitchell county, Iowa, and at the age of 18 moved to Helena, Mont., where he was employed by the Union Pacific railroad.

A the age of 22 he returned to Iowa and apprenticed himself as a barber at Osage.

In 1895 he came to Geneva and purchased a barbershop from William Hickethier. In February, 1903, he was appointed postmaster. He served as postmaster and barber in Geneva until June 30, 1941, when he retired by the postal department after 38 years of service.

He continued to reside in Geneva until his death Thursday.

On July 26, 1898, he was married to Edith Parmenter at Rockford and brought his bride to Geneva.

He is survived by the widow, son, Jasper J. Gillette, of Ocean, Cal., a daughter, Ruth E. Gillette, Des Moines, son, Frank I. Gillette, Fresno, Cal., brother, Eugene M. Gillette, Wenatchee, Wash., and a sister Mrs. Harriette Tibbetts, of Mitchell.
