CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Margaret (Grant) Barnhill, 89, of Charles City, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at the Floyd County Medical Center after a long and fulfilling life.

Per her request she was cremated and a small memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the Gospel Lighthouse in Floyd where she attended church. Pastor Paul Phillips will officiate. Inurnment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Cemetery in Rockwell, Iowa.

There will be a gathering of family and friends for a time of fellowship following the service at the Gospel Lighthouse in Floyd.

Margaret was born to Ernest and Gladys (Fowler) Shuck in Ventura, Iowa, on January 15, 1925. She later moved with her family to Rhame, North Dakota, where she attended the school her mother taught at.

In school, her proudest moment was the speech she wrote that won 3rd place in a state competition. During her summers and spare time she rode horses and captured rattlesnakes for their tails. She enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with her school friends.

In her adult years, she lived in Iowa. Margaret married her late husband, Verl, and moved to Rockwell. She shared her many talents working as a nurse’s aide at the nursing home, cooking at the local restaurant, and managing the American Legion.

After the passing of her husband, she moved to South Dakota where her sister and family lived. Margaret finished her life’s journey in Charles City, Iowa, where she spent years as a foster grandparent.

Living family members include her five children: Sherril (Al) Hastings from Charles City; Karen (Dennis) Seidel from Sturgis, South Dakota; Linda (Tom) Taylor from Buffalo, Missouri; Kristy Honaker from Phoenix, Arizona; and Troy (Jody) Grant from Thornton. She had 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Margaret is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Beckman from Mesa, Arizona; brother, Robert (Betty) Shuck from Rhame, North Dakota; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Verl; and three brothers: Donald Shuck, Wyman Hanson, and Clifford Shuck.

The family wishes to express a very special thank-you to Dr. Paul Royer along with all of the nurses and staff at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home and the Floyd County Medical Center for all of the wonderful care provided Margaret over the years.
