Bette Jean Winters

MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - Bette Jean Winters, 83, of Marble Rock, and formerly of Rockford, died on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at her home. Online condolences may left at www.fullertonfh.com.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with a one-hour prior visitation on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W. in Rockford. The Rev. Judy Wooton will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main in Rockford. Those planning on expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Bette Winters Memorial Fund.

Bette Winters was born on June 9, 1930, in Hansell, to John W. Davis Sr. and Lucille “Dodd” Davis. She graduated from Rock Falls High School.

Bette was united in marriage on June 24, 1951, in Mason City to Virgel Dean Winters. Throughout their life together they resided in Mason City, Rockford and Marble Rock. For 19 years Bette worked as a banquet waitress for the Holiday Inn in Mason City. Bette also worked for Terry’s Catering out of Rudd, and waitressed there for several years.

Virgel and Bette had seven children. She loved her children and loved being a grandmother. Bette valued her time with all of her grandkids. She liked being involved with their activities and sporting events, especially basketball. Bette’s basketball team went to State when she was in high school and it was a sport she always had a passion for.

In her free time Bette would take bus trips to different casinos. She worked as a hostess on the bus trips. Bette played bingo as often as she could at the casinos as well as many places locally that had bingo. When Bette was at home she liked bird watching and handing out candy, especially bubble gum to the neighborhood kids. Bette will be remembered as a loving, strong, and giving person.

Those left to cherish her memory include her seven children, Sandra Field, Michael Winters, Barry (Jackie) Winters, Victoria (Barry) Rowe, Willard (Tina) Winters, Tracy (Heather) Winters, and Jamie Winters; many nieces and nephews; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgel Winters; parents, John W. Davis Sr. and Lucille Schulte; sister, Jeanette Friend; brother, John W. Davis Jr.; and grandson, Douglas Wayne Best.
