CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Dan L. Nelson, 62, of Charles City, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at his home.

A funeral Mass for Dan Nelson will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday where there will be a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Dan Nelson was born May 1, 1951, at Bloomfield, the son of Arthur and Doris (Proctor) Nelson. He graduated from Charles City Community High School in 1969 and attended Kirkwood Community College.

On December 2, 1972, Dan was united in marriage to Deborah Apel.

His passion for computers led him into a career in CAD and mechanical design. Dan worked as an independent contractor for Kraft Foods for 20 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Dan was an off-road motorcycle enthusiast who supported organizations that were dedicated to the responsible use of public and private land for the benefit of all recreationists. He believed that through awareness the negative stigma associated with the sport could be changed.

Dan was a member of North Iowa Dirt Riders which is a family friendly, nonprofit organization committed to the promotion of off road riding and racing.

Living family members include his wife, Deborah of Charles City; two children, Zachary (Krista) Nelson of Fairfax and Aaron (Sarah) Nelson of Altoona; three grandchildren, Oliver Nelson of Fairfax and Avery and Corbin Nelson of Altoona, his mother, Doris Nelson of Charles City; two brothers, Chris Nelson of Charles City and Michael Nelson of Duluth, Minnesota; and a sister, Joan Nelson of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Nelson.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
