CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Virgil Jacobson, 88, of Charles City, Iowa, died on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Floyd County Medical Center.

A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with a one hour prior visitation on Monday, March 24, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., Charles City. The Rev. Jim Beranek will be officiating.

Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. Those planning on expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Elk’s Lodge in Charles City and Floyd Lion’s Club.

Virgil Victor Jacobson was born on April 20, 1925 in Floyd County to Theron and Dora (Cole) Jacobson. He was born and raised on the family farm west of Floyd and graduated Floyd Consolidated High School in 1942. After graduation, Virgil attended Iowa State University for two quarters in 1945. He later graduated from the school of banking at the University of Wisconsin; which he attended for three summers.

Virgil was a hard worker at an early age and continued working six days a week for most of his life. In 1944 he was employed in Hanford, Washington, by Olympic Commissary and DuPont Co. He was later employed by Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington. In 1946, Virgil worked for Great Lakes Naval Base on terminal leave until March of 1947.

On June 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Echobeth Jacobson. To this union two boys were born. Together they resided in Charles City and Virgil became employed at Citizens National Bank, now known as First Citizens National Bank. He was a banker for 37 years until retiring in 1983. After retirement he spent the summers in Lansing, Iowa. and winters in Benton, Kentucky, and later moved back to Charles City. On May 30, 1994 Echobeth passed away.

Virgil was united in marriage on July 17, 1995 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, to Shirley Hage. Together they enjoyed traveling and went to Hawaii. Virgil and Shirley also spent the winter months in Florida and Arizona. They had many wonderful years together.

In his free time Virgil had several hobbies. He did all kinds of leather work; making purses and belts. Virgil was an avid hunter and fisherman who frequently fished Iowa, Minnesota, and Canada with family & friends. He passed his love down to the grandchildren, who he would take fishing every summer on the Mississippi River. Virgil had great love for his children and grandchildren. His other love was flying. He earned his Pilot’s License in 1971 and flew his own plane for over 20 years.

Virgil was a member of many groups and organizations. He belonged to the Charles City Kiwanis, Floyd Lion’s Club, Elk’s Lodge, Moose Lodge, various bank groups, and also helped with many local associations. Virgil was very well known in the community as a banker. He was a trustworthy and honorable person who will be missed by all of those who loved and knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 18 years, Shirley Jacobson of Charles City; sons, Steve (Nancy) Jacobson of Norwalk, Iowa, and Dave Jacobson of Lansing, Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer (Courtney) Pero of Allen, Texas, and Christin (Stephen) Hall of Phoenix, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Avery Pero & McKenna, Preston, and Sloane Hall; sister-in-law, Illola Keefe of Decorah, Iowa; brother-in-law, Donald (Carol) Flater of Montezuma, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theron and Dora Jacobson; first wife, Echobeth Jacobson; sisters, Thelma Mooberry and Mildred James; brother, Vern Jacobson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Jacobson; and brother-in-law, Virgil Reis.
