MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - Helen Darlene Debner, 87, of Marble Rock died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Bob Scheurer officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Retz Funeral Home in Marble Rock.

Memorials may be directed to the Helen Debner Memorial Fund, Box 219, Greene, IA 50636.

Helen Darlene Debner was born December 27, 1926, in rural Mitchell County to John C. and Velma B. (Rutt) Patterson. She attended country school, graduating from St. Ansgar High School in 1944. Following graduation she worked for Toeterville Hardware Store. She later moved to Charles City and worked for Oliver Corp.

On December 13, 1947, Helen was united in marriage to Clarence Debner at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Marble Rock, Colwell and Greene for six years, and operated the Hartwick Tap and Grocery in Hartwick, Iowa.

Helen was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, where she made many quilts to be used for mission work.

She loved flowers and gardening, making quilts, and doing puzzles. Helen was a hard-working farm wife who enjoyed being outside and caring for the farm animals. She was a very kind and generous person that was loved by anyone who knew her.

Helen is survived by three daughters, Linda Debner of Marble Rock, Patricia (Kim Don) Nelson of Marengo, Joan (Jeffrey) Wright of Holmen, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Paul Nelson of Williamsburg, Sara Nelson of North Liberty, Alicia (Nathaniel) Blumberg of Portage, Wisconsin, Krysta Wright of Holmen, Wisconsin, and Jeremy Wright of Holmen, Wisconsin; sisters, Neva Nelson of St. Ansgar and Lois (Walt) Benesh of Austin, Minnesota; a brother, John (Fran) Patterson of St. Ansgar; sisters–in-law, Mildred Patterson and Ruth Patterson, both of Osage, Della Van Fleet, of Cedar Falls, and Marlene Gerholdt of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, in 2001; her parents; five brothers, Don, Max, Darrell, Merle and Kenneth; brothers-in-law, Otto Nelson, Dean Debner, Roy Keith, Jake Van Fleet; and sisters-in-law, Enid Patterson, Grace Debner and Viola Keith.
