BURIAL AT CHARLES CITY

James C. Bast

James C. Bast, 79, of Nashua, Iowa, died Saturday, January 4, 2014, at his home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua.

Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City with David Bast, Daniel Bast, Bob Bast, Steve Sudol, Rich Bast, and Jason Huffman serving as pallbearers. Friends may greet the family 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home – Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

James Carl Bast was born July 31, 1934, the son of Earl and Edna (Posekany) Bast in rural Hudson, Black Hawk County, Iowa. Jim attended school in Ionia graduating from Ionia High School in 1955.

After completing high school, Jim was drafted into the United States Navy. Jim honorably served his country and was discharged in November of 1956.

After his time in the service, Jim started working for The Brick and Tile Company in Sheffield. Then, he started working for the Waterloo Valve Spring Company, working there for several years. In 1972, Jim started working for Sara Lee in New Hampton. Jim retired from Sara Lee in 1996 after 24 years of service.

During retirement, Jim enjoyed volunteering at 11th Street Chautaqua Guest Home in Charles City. He spent time working on his lawn, and tending to his garden. He was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Cliff Bast of Nashua, Donald (Marvlyon) Bast of Nashua, along with several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Calvin Bast; sister, Verna Bast; sister-in-law, Sally Bast; and nephew, Rich Bast.
