Barrie David Smith

1935-2013

Barrie David Smith, 78, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at his home in Columbia, Mo.

He was born on July 3, 1935, in Charles City, the son of Wallace Smith and Frances (Hamilton) Smith. He attended Charles City schools and graduated from CCHS in 1953 where he was active in sports (football, basketball, baseball, golf) and also in science programs, particularly as one of the “Boylen Boys,”a small group of students mentored by Cliff Boylen, renowned teacher of science and math. Barrie received a Bausch and Lomb scholarship, attended the University of Chicago as a pre-med student and then transferred to the University of Iowa Medical School where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology and a doctorate in anatomy.

Barrie and Elizabeth Nagle were married on Jan. 3, 1958, in Iowa City where they lived until their move to Columbia, Mo., in 1966. He and Elizabeth (“Liz”) had three daughters, Kimberly (deceased), Suzie (Carlos) Amato of Los Angeles, and Pamela (Doug) McAllister of Columbia, Mo. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Lizzie Vowles and Will McAllister, and two sisters, Diana (Ron) Davis and Linda Medved, both of whom attended Charles City schools. Liz preceded Barrie in death in February 2012.

Barrie spent his working years as a professor of microanatomy, gross anatomy, and endocrinology at the University of Iowa and the University of Missouri where he retired in 1990. During the 1970s and the 1980s, he was also on the faculty of medicine at the American University of Beirut, and the faculty of medicine at the University of Jordan, Amman, as a Fulbright scholar.

Barrie enjoyed years of international travel, musky fishing in Wisconsin, hunting, raising Labradors and English setters, and piloting his single-engine airplane. And it was well known that he loved European handmade shotguns, Shakespeare, opera and the symphony.
