CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Arnold Deetz, 83, of Charles City died Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Arnold Deetz

Arnold Deetz, 83, of Charles City died on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

His visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday Jan. 2, 2014, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. Charles City, and a graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday Jan. 3, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home to begin, and finishing at Riverside Cemetery, also in Charles City.

Arnold was born on August 19, 1930, in Stapleton, Iowa, the son of Martin and Leta (Fiddler) Deetz. He grew up around Lourdes and began farming at the age of 14. Arnold met the love of his life Grace Thompson and they married in Lourdes on Oct. 10, 1964. To this union their two sons were born. They moved to Charles City 41 years ago. In his nearly 60 years of farming, Arnold farmed grain and livestock. Farming and all it entails was really his passion. Arnold farmed from 1944-2001, he was a very hard worker and through this work ethic he taught his boys to work hard, don’t ever give up and just be happy with what you have. Lessons his sons live by.

Arnold belonged to the Cedar Valley Engine Club and Farm Bureau. He collected toy John Deere tractors, interesting rocks and knick-knacks.

He really liked his cats and had one special dog named Scooter. Arnold loved all animals he even enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels. Arnold was very good at woodworking he made a couple of wooden tractors and wooden pliers.

A time to remember for Arnold and his family is when their son Larry was stationed in Germany in the Army and Arnold, Grace and Doug took their first plane ride over there to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary together.

Those left to cherish Arnold’s memory are his wife Grace, sons Larry and Doug (Theresa) Deetz, all of Charles City, his sister Marion Franzen of Decorah and grandchildren Rick, Tiffany, Emily and Caleb.

Arnold is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Corrine and Lorrene, his brothers Vern and Leo, and also twin girls who died before they were born in 1966.
