Doris Lucille Kies
Doris Lucille Kies, 79, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Monday, December 16, 2013 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk.
She was born on May 16, 1934 in Lisbon, the daughter of Gale and Ina Locke Kennon. On August 11, 1957 she was united in marriage to Orville Kies in Oelwein. He preceded her in death on October 12, 2007.
Doris graduated from Maynard High School with the Class of 1953. She then went to St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids and graduated with the Class of 1956. Doris worked as a nurse and was the director of nurses at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.
Doris and Orville moved to Keokuk in 2001 to be near their family. While living there, Doris volunteered at Wells-Carey Elementary School and Hawthorne Elementary School for many years. She was also a member of the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary, member of the Daughters of the Revolution Jean Espy 5034 1A and a member of First Christian Church of Keokuk.
Doris spent time doing genealogy, a hobby started by her husband. She also enjoyed sewing and knitting.
Those celebrating her life include her children and their families, Lora, Jim and Brandon Wolff of Keokuk; Philip, Susie, Jacob and Nicole Kies of Cincinnati, Ohio; Bryan, Lori, Chelsea and Kelby Kies of Keokuk; Scott, Sue, Alex Zach, Megan and Ian Kies of St. Paul, Minn.; and Eric, Laura, Maddox, and Kennon Kies of Davenport. Other survivors include her siblings, Grace Doering of Luana and Steve Kennon of Oelwein.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Dylan Kies and two sisters, JoAnn Lang and Carol Jean Larson.
A service of celebration will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday at the First Christian Church in Keokuk with Reverend David Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2-3 p.m., Sunday with family meeting with friends at that time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to First Christian Church or to the Doris Kies scholarship fund for future nursing students.
