CHARLES CITY, IOWA -- David R. Turner, 91, of Charles City, died Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and at the church Monday an hour prior to the service.

David Robert Turner was born October 16, 1922, at the family home in Cedar Rapids, the son of William and Anna (Schultz) Turner. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and Coe College both in Cedar Rapids. On October 19, 1944, he was united in marriage to Elsie Jacobs in the chapel of Coe College. David served in the United States Army for 22 years. During World War II he served in the European Theater, was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge, and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. From 1965 to 1985 he was employed with the Floyd County Iowa Department of Human Services. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Retired Officers Association, Elks Lodge, and Lions Club where he had served on the Board of Directors.

He enjoyed working outside where he "lived to mow" his yard, taking walks, having dinner with friends, playing 500, reading, working crossword puzzles and watching the Cubs and Hawkeyes.

Living family members include two children, Robert C. Turner of Nora Springs and Kathy Shawhan of Charles City; three grandchildren, Lon (Loretta) Turner, Michelle Shawhan and Jessie Shawhan; and four great grandchildren, Chelsea, Jenna and Hayden Turner and Joseph Ginther.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elsie on November 2, 1987; and seven siblings.
