LaVerne Byers, 91, of Charles City, died Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Rehabilitation Center of Allison at Allison.

A funeral Mass for LaVerne Byers will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. and a Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

LaVerne Matthew Byers was born August 18, 1922, at New Haven, the son of Lloyd and Jennie (Weber) Byers. His father died in 1926. He graduated from the Colwell School in 1940.

LaVerne proudly served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946 serving aboard a mine sweeper in the European and South Pacific theaters. On August 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Geneva Hughes at Austin, Minn. LaVerne worked at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company for 37 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed dancing, keeping his yard immaculate, vegetable gardening and watching sports, especially the Cubs and Hawkeye football and basketball.

Living family members include his sister, Patricia Hagarty of Charles City; a step-son, Wayne (Anna Mae) Stratton of Charles City; three step-grandsons, Jeff (Lisa) Stratton, Joe (Sami) Stratton and Jerry (Melisa) Stratton; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step father, Harold Cross; wife, Geneva, on January 10, 2004; a grandson, James Stratton; a great granddaughter, Elizabeth Stratton; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ida Byers; a niece, Katherine Rose Hagarty; and three nephews, Roger, Mike and Dennis Byers.
