Orley ‘John’ Mayfield, Jr.

Orley “John” Mayfield, Jr., 76, of Ft. Pierce, Fla., formerly of Charles City, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at Lynmoore at Lawnwood Assisted Living in Ft. Pierce.

Funeral services for John Mayfield will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at Hauser Funeral Home with Patty Kellogg officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Orley “John” Mayfield was born April 29, 1937, in Charles City, the son of Orley John and Catherine (Smith) Mayfield. John was educated in Charles City and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University. John was united in marriage to Carol “Jean” Dollman on May 30, 1981, at Charles City. He was President of Dr. Mayfield Labs. John loved all animals and was a very gentle soul. He enjoyed boat rides and watching the dolphins on the Indian River Lagoon in Florida. John’s wife, Carol “Jean”, was very dear to his heart and he missed her immensely after her passing.

Living family members include his children: Margo (Tom) Lind and James Mayfield; step-children: Brenda (Charles) Sterk Gray, Sharon (Scott Cook) Sterk Johnston, Dwayne (Katrina) Sterk, Kathy Caldwell and John (Connie) Maier; grandchildren: Samantha and Thomas Lind, Elizabeth and Devon Mayfield, Heidi Johnston Achee, Brandon (Li Li) Gray and Melissa Jo Gray, Sarah Sterk, Amanda (Dustin) Wells, and James and Thomas Sterk; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Marilyn De-Mars and Betty Sogard; sisters-in-law: Nancy Miller, Linda Miner, Judy Prawdzik and their spouses along with Janice Dollman; and several wonderful nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol Jean; sister, Kathleen Beninga; and brothers-in-law: Bentley DeMars, Dean Sogard and Kenneth Dollman.
