CHARLES CITY, IOWA - John J. Grant, 95, of Charles City, died Friday, November 15, 2013, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A memorial service for John Grant will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 23, at Hauser Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery at Shell Rock.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa.

John James Grant was born July 30, 1918, in a sod house in Brewster, Nebraska, the son of James Raymond Grant and Mary (Coen) Grant. When John was in the first grade, he and his family moved to Greene. After September 1929, John and his siblings were raised by their maternal grandparents, George and Lucinda Coen, as a result of their mother’s death in a car accident.

On March 1, 1941, he married Dorothy Jungling at the First Methodist Church in Waterloo, Iowa. He and Dorothy celebrated 65 years of married life.

John J. Grant entered service on Dec. 7, 1942 at Camp Dodge, Iowa, training at Fort McClellan, Ala.. He served in the Army Air Corps until February 1946, spending most of his service at Waycross, Georgia. Air Base. In May 1946, John, his brother LeRoy and LeRoy’s brother-in-law Robert Swab, started a lime and gravel trucking business in Shell Rock named Grant Brothers and Swab. John and Dorothy moved to Charles City in 1958 and became partners in Allied Redi-Mix, Allied Construction and Allied Equipment. John became interested in flying in his younger years taking many trips in his Piper aircraft. He and Dorothy loved to travel, especially to Whitehall, Mont. Dorothy passed away on Oct. 17, 2006. John lost another special person, Nellie Meineke, in January 2013.

Living family members include two sisters: Freda Willhite of Davenport and Mary Louise Long of Lynchburg, Va. Nephews and nieces: Gary Grant (Mary) of Sedalia, Mo., Janice Grant (Bob Martin) of Oregon, Wis., Jerry Meader (Carol) of Rockford, Glennis Krull of McIntire, Judy (Marshall) Sonksen of Bettendorf, Darrel Willhite of Cedar Rapids, Mary Lou Long of Lynchburg, Va., Patty Kent (Ronald) of Waterloo and Mike Grant of Independence.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy; a sister, Sue Meader; and three brothers: Paul, LeRoy and Bill Grant.
