ROCKFORD, IOWA - Donald Eugene Lohr, 72, formerly of Rockford, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, at Rockford United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W., via the Nora Springs Exit. The Rev. Judy Wooton will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.

Memorials are suggested to The Fossil and Prairie Park Preserve in Rockford.

Donald Eugene ‘Don’ Lohr

Donald Eugene “Don” Lohr, 72, formerly of Rockford died on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Online condolences may be left at www.fullertonfh.com.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Rockford United Methodist Church, 21 3rd St NW via the Nora Springs Exit. There will be a two hour prior visitation. Rev. Judy Wooton will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. Those planning on expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to: The Fossil and Prairie Park Preserve in Rockford in memory of Don.

Don was born on April 2, 1942, in Rockford; the second child born to Robert and Marlys Lohr. He was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Rockford.

Don was a member of the first graduating class of the consolidated RRMR School District in 1959. After graduation, Don went to work for Osco Drug in Mason City. In 1963 he was drafted into the Army and served as an MP at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon discharge, Don returned to work at Osco Drug in various management positions in Albert Lea, Minn., Oshkosh, Wis., Bettendorf, Iowa, and finally Chicago, Ill. area stores as a district manager. Don retired in 1997 after 42 years.

During his younger years, Don enjoyed hunting or fishing and a good game of pool at the local pool hall. Later on in life, his hobbies included: reading, walks in the great outdoors, observing wildlife, and anything Green Bay Packers. He was curious about everything and would drive for miles to learn or see something that was of interest to him. One of his favorite trips was to Churchill, Canada, to observe the polar bears in their winter habitat.

Don had a generous heart and loved his extended family very much. If any of his siblings were traveling home to Rockford or to another destination, he would often show up to join in the fun.

Don is survived by his father, Robert Lohr of Nora Spring; brother, Jack Lohr of Carmel of Ind.; sisters, Sharon Ginther of Mesa, Ariz., and Bobbi (Bob) Stubbs of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; nephews, Marty (Leann) Ginther and Scott Ginther of Rockford, Iowa; nieces, Laurie (Kevin) Carlson of Green Bay, Wis., and Jill (George) Nicolich of Carmel, Ind.; five great-nieces and nephews; nine great-great-nieces and nephews, Aunt, Phyllis Brallier of Pasadena, Calif.; and many extended family members.

In addition, Don also leaves behind former wife Jan Brown and her three adult children and their families. Don was especially close to his step-grandson, Spencer, who lived nearby. “Papa” enjoyed attending Spencer's sporting events and taking him shopping for neat things that they could work on and build together.

Don was preceded in death by his mother, Marlys Lohr; paternal grandparents, Alvin and Elsie Lohr; maternal grandparents, James and Ruby Wilson; and several aunts and uncles.
