Margaret Benning, 88, of Plainfield, Iowa, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home-Olson Chapel in Nashua. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Charles City, Iowa.

Friends may greet the family 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home – Olson Chapel, in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday. Online condolences for Margaret’s family may be left at hugbackfuneralhome.com.

Obituary for Margaret Benning

Margaret Benning age 88 of Plainfield, Iowa died Sunday, October 27, 2013, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home-Olson Chapel in Nashua. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel, in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Margaret Lenona Benning was born December 2, 1924, in Lisbon, North Dakota, the second of six children to Fred and Stella (Johnson) Lahman. Following high school, she and a girlfriend moved to Rochford, Illinois, to work in a factory making firing pins during World War II.

On March 10, 1949, at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Plainfield, she married Edwin Benning. The couple farmed for 35 years near Plainfield and Margaret also worked at the Hartman Locker in Plainfield, Kay’s Restaurant in Nashua and the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Margaret loved to crochet and made many beautiful items throughout her life. She made bed-spreads, tablecloths and hundreds of butterflies. She also had a love for flowers and the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include one son, Bill (Renee) Benning of Plainfield; three grandsons, Luke (Veronica) Benning of Chino Valley, Arizona, Scott Benning of Charles City, Levi Benning of Plainfield; five great-grandchildren, Nikki, Joshua, Ashleigh, Brooklyn and Kimberly; one sister, Dolores Van Damme of Marlette, Michigan; two brothers, Mick (Joan) Lahman of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Fred (Marie) Lahman of Hines, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1984, one brother, Arnold Lahman and a sister, Jeanne Fraser.
