A service for Douglas G. Matthews was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at the Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Words of comfort were provided by Mr. Glenn Rohde of Paton.
Honorary bearers were: Randy Wright, Matt Cornelius, LeRoy Sherlock, Dennis Beaver, Rod Tripp, Tom Tobin and Greg Stough. Casket bearers were: Mike Healy, Ben Sanders, Curtis Carstens, Duane Delp, Lucas Shipley, Gary Betts, Bruce Keeney and Glen Rohden. Marjorie Vannatta was the pianist and Dick Bardole was the soloist. Hymns for Doug’s service were: “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” “In The Garden,” “Wings Of A Dove,” “Lord’s Prayer,” “Just As I Am” and “Silent Night” After the service, was a luncheon in the St. Joseph Parrish Center three blocks east of the funeral home. Interment took place at Oakhill Cemetery in Nashua following the lunch.
Douglas Gayle Matthews, son of Marvin Leroy Matthews and Gwendolyn J. Troutner Matthews, was born March 15, 1957, in Charles City, and died December 10, 2012, in Jefferson. Doug was 55.
He grew up in Charles City, where he graduated high school in 1975. After high school, Doug went to North Iowa Area Community College. He worked at Midland REC for 13 years and Hy-Vee as a meat cutter in Boone and also in Charles City. Doug was a hard worker. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, and also went to Lineman School when he was 40 years old. Doug moved to Jefferson 14 years ago. He enjoyed being outdoors where he would fish, hunt and garden. Doug was a friendly person who helped others and he would do anything for anyone.
Doug is preceded in death by his father, Marvin; brothers Virgil and Steven Matthews; and his grandparents. Doug will always be lovingly remembered by his mother, Gwen Matthews, of Charles City; brother James Matthews and his wife, Lynda, of Yakima, Wash.; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
