OBITUARY OF CHRISTIAN HARTZ

(7 Sep 1830 - 7 Jan 1923)

Charles City Press - Christian Hartz was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, September 7, 1830, and passed away in Minneapolis, Minn., Jan. 7, 1923, at the age of 92 years and 4 months.

November 11th, 1859, he was married to Miss Magdeline Bentine, To this union were born 11 children, five sons and six daughters. Six children preceded the father in death.

He came to America in 1860, and after spending several years in New York, and the state of Wisconsin, he came to Floyd County, Iowa, about fifty years ago, settling on a farm about six miles southwest of Charles City. On August 11, 1884, his wife died. At the same time, one son and two daughters were stricken with the same fatal disease and were also taken by the angel of death. These were hard days for him, as him home had been placed under quarantine, and the neighbors were not permitted to come in and give assistance, and even the necessary help needed to properly take care of the sick and bury the dead, were not to be had.

He often spoke of it afterward, how wonderfully the dear Lord helped, sustained and comforted him during this dark period and saved the other members of his family who were also sick at the same time, from suffering a similar fate. Father hartz, as he was familiarly called, had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for nearly fifty-five years.

On July 24, he was married the second time to Mrs. Conradine Duesenberg, who preceded him in death, Sept. 21, 1918. During the past few years he has made his home with his son, John, in Minneapolis, Minn. He leaves to mourn his departure, one brother Fred Hartz, of Rowayton, Conn., nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and three sons and two daughters, as follows: G. A. hartz, La Porte City, Iowa; Mrs. Martha Reed, Ladysmith, Wis.; Mrs. Ida Birney, Greene, Iowa; John B. Hartz, Minneapolis, Minn.; Edward M. Hartz, Aitkin, Minn.

The sons and daughters were all present at the funeral service, conducted by Rev. John H. Klaus, pastor of the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 9, 1923. Mr. E. E. Wellemeyer and Miss Mynne Gelhaus gave two selections in song, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Lead Me Gently Home, Father." the body was laid to rest in the West St. Charles Cemetery.
