Curry, Robert Leigh

At the home of his parents in Charles City, Iowa, Sunday, January 11, 1903, occurred the death of Robert Leigh, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Curry, aged 29 years, 2 months and 6 days.

The deceased was born in Floyd, Iowa, November 5, 1873. He attended the Floyd school and graduated from the Floyd high school when he as 14 years of age. A year later he entered the Upper Iowa University at Fayette, graduating from that institution of learning with the highest honors in the year 1898. He then took up the work of his chosen profession, that of teaching.

For two years he served as principal of the Otranto schools and was then elected as principal of the Osage schools. He had just completed the first term in the fourth year when he was forced to give up owing to his ill health. His first illness began a year ago last September, when he was taken ill with diabetes. He consulted physicians at Osage who informed him of his danger. Not being content, he came home and consulted his family physician, Dr. E. G. Dennis, who also advised him to take a rest. The school board gave him two weeks' vacation and he again resumed his work and struggled bravely on without a murmur.

Last July he went to Waterloo and consulted medical aid, but he found no relief. While there a growth appeared on his left arm and this caused him considerable trouble. He resumed his school work and never complained or failed to do his duty. January 1st he was operated on at Emergency hospital and a dead bone was removed from his arm. The operation was in every way successful, but diabetes had gained such an inroad to his system. It was soon apparent his life was in danger.

After two days he was removed from the hospital to the home of his parents on Blair Street, where he was a patient and constant sufferer until on Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, surrounded by his parents and loved ones he fell calmly to sleep.
Language of eulogy, words of sympathy, and tears of love cannot lift the burden of grief which bows the hearts of his stricken parents and brothers.

It cannot bring back the bloom to the cheek, the luster to the eye, or the dear form to the vacant chair; neither can they add anything to the high esteem in which he as held.

Leigh Curry was one of this city's best young men. He seemed to possess so many good traits that everywhere he was known he was liked. First of all he was a Christian and endeavored both by precept and example to show it to the world. He was converted when he was thirteen years old and joined the Methodist church and was a consistent member until death, and was always interested in church work. He was also teacher of a bible class and was ever endeavering to do good.

At school, though a good student, he was always jolly and ready for good wholesome sport and no debate was compete unless he was one of the debaters. He was loved by both students and teachers. For the past five years he has held a state certificate and was bound to rise in his chosen work. in his home he was kind and true and in which wealth of affection was lavished upon him. Among his intimate friends he manifested a spirit of unselfishness, and in business relations his word could always be depended upon.

With such a rich legacy he departed this life. Better are these virtues than the riches of the world.

The last sad duty of laying away the remains took place from the home at 10 o'clock this morning. The services were conducted by Rev. F. P. Shaffer, assisted by Rev. J. R. Sanford. The members of the K. of P. lodge of this city, also Osage, attended the funeral in a body. A number of pupils from the Osage schools with their teachers, also came down on the morning train.

The large home was filled with friends eager to pay their last token of respect.
