Leland, Carrie Weeks

Carrie Weeks was born in Cazenovia, New York, on March 7, 1840. When a babe she was brought by her parents to Hudson, Ohio. Here she was educated in a young ladies seminary and at Mt. Union College in Alliance. She was a fine scholar, especially in the classics and in English Literature and music.

On June 9, 1862 she was married to Samuel Phelps Leland. Her married life was an ideal one -- a life of sweet domestic peace. She delighted in travel. In the gratification of this passion she was peculiarly favored. She made four journeys to Europe and traveled more than one hundred and twenty thousand miles with her husband in this country. Two children blessed her happy marriage.

These died in early infancy. One was born in 1864 and is buried in Hudson, Ohio; the other was born in 1871 and is buried in Nashua, Iowa.

Mrs. Leland had a thorough musical education. Her voice was a phenomenal one. For several years she was employed by Prof. H. R. Palmer of New York, to lead the choruses at his musical conventions. And with all this she was eminently domestic. Her home was her earthly heaven. She filled it with peace and rest and love. Her life was a continuous sunshine.

Though her late years have been years of suffering, yet she bore all with no word of complaint, but each hour was sweetened by her hopeful spirit. She lived to make others happy, and she will be mourned by the many whom she has blessed. She was a Christian. Her faith was as clear as the sky. She has been a member of the Congregational Church of Charles City since 1877.

At 2:45 of the afternoon of November 2, 1903, her sweet spirit passed to her eternal home. The funeral services will be held at her late residence at 2 o'clock p.m. on Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Wilson Denny, of the Congregational Church, assisted by President F. Hirsch, of the college. The college will be adjourned in the afternoon and the students and faculty will attend in a body.
