OBITUARY: Phillip Schmidt (April 12, 1835 - Jan 6, 1919)
Phillip Schmidt was born April 12, 1835 in Germany. In 1857 he was united in marriage to Margrete Karl. To this union four children were born, three daughters and one son, the daughters dieing in infancy. Father Schmidt came to America in 1869, living at Yellow Creek near Freeport, Ill. While living in Illinois his first wife died and on the 18th of October 1871, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Baier. This union was blessed with nine children, five daughters and four sons. In the year 1875 Father Schmidt moved to Rockford, Iowa, living near the Flood Creek Methodist Church of which church he remained an active member until his death. He accepted Christ as his personal savior when yet a young man.
His wife, Elizabeth Schmidt, died on June 16, 1911 and in Sept. 1915, was again united in marriage to Christina Myers.
Father Schmidt was blessed to see the fine age of 83 years, 8 months and 23 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, five daughters and five sons, which are Andrew of Manley, Iowa; Mrs. Conrad Duesenberg, Rockford, Iowa; Mrs. Ed Huxham, Oak park, Illinois; Charles of Rockford, Iowa; Mrs. Adolph Daake of Rockford, Iowa; Fred or Reinbeck, Iowa; Mrs. Clara Rumft of Reinbeck, Iowa; and Emma and Edward of Rockford, 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Flood Creek Methodist Church conducted by Rev. F. J. Hoffman. Interment was made in the beautiful Cemetery of the Flood Creek M. E. Church.
