Moritz John Wachsmuth, the son of Heinrich Christoph Wachsmuth and his wife Martha Luther, was born in Saxony, Germany, on the 26th day of December, 1850. Here he was baptised and began his elementary education in the Christian day school.

When he was nine years of age he came to America with his parents who settled in New Bremen, Cook County, Illinois. Here he finished his school work and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. About 60 years ago he came to Iowa where he soon acquired a farm and on which he lived for 25 years. On Feb. 23, 1875 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Catherine Marie Niemann who was his faithful helpmate to the time of her death.

In the year 1900 the Wachsmuth's left the farm and came to live in Charles City. Here Mrs. Wachsmuth passed to her reward on the 28th day of November, 1928. Since that time the departed has made his home with his sister, Mrs. Louise Venz.

Mr. Wachsmuth was a life long member of the Lutheran church and one of the oldest members of the congregation. His usual place in the German services was seldom vacant and frequently he partook of the holy communion. On his last sick bed when he felt the approach of death he craved for and once more received the Lord's supper.

Throughout his life his health had been good. Just about a year ago however, he began to suffer from heart disease. He spent some time in the hospital, but soon recovered so that he could again attend to his religious duties. In January of this year he again suffered a serious attack which was repeated a month later. This together with the infirmities of old age brought about his demise which occurred last Wednesday morning at 5:15 (February 13, 1935) at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 17 days.

He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Marie Schroeder and Mrs. Lena Lillick, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Louise Venz.

His mortal remains were laid to rest in RIverside cemetery on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, 1935.
