CHARLES CITY, IOWA – Shirley Harman, 87, of Charles City, died Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Shirley Harman will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, and Saturday an hour prior to the service.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ann Porter Harman was born March 27, 1926, at Jewell, the daughter of Melvin and Amy (Rugg) Porter. She graduated from Jewell High School in 1943. Shirley lived in Jewell until she was married to Leo Harman on November 17, 1943. They moved to Florence, South Carolina, where Leo was stationed with the Army Air Force. After Leo's discharge they moved back to Jewell where they lived from 1946 to 1956 when they moved to Charles City.

She worked at Muesel Hardware and then for J. C. Penney's from 1965 until it closed in 1986. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pythian Sisters, and volunteered at the Treasure Chest. Her interests included embroidery, sewing, camping and fishing.

Living family members include three children, Steven (Charlene) Harman of Iowa City, Carolyn (Donnie) Lokenvitz and Connie (Dale) Nicholson both of Charles City; 13 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; special friend Steve Wood of Charles City; sister-in-law, Cleanne St. John of Fairmont, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo on July 31, 1995; 2 brothers; and three sisters.
