Arnold Ernest Haller was born May 4, 1921, in Charles City, the son of Ernest and Elizabeth (Kruger) Haller. He was educated in the Charles City Public Schools, graduating in 1939. While in high school he was hired by a millwork firm and continued this work until World War II broke out. Arnold served in the U.S. Army. Before being shipped overseas he married the love of his life, Arlene Mitchell on January 9, 1944. During the war Arnold fought in the Italian Campaign serving with the 91st Infantry Division earning three Bronze Stars.

After the war Arnold made a smooth transition from serving his country to serving his community as a volunteer and businessman. For several years he continued working in the millwork business, living in Charles City and Cedar Falls. Haller Lumber Company was established in Marble Rock in 1953 and flourished for 40 years. During this time Arnold was one of the founders of the local Lions Club and the Winnebago Scout Reservation.

He served on St. Paul's Lutheran Church Council, the volunteer fire department, the Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock school board; he was a Boy Scout leader and worked as a Red Cross and YMCA volunteer among many other community activities. Arnold and Arlene and the community raised and nurtured three children.

In their retirement years the couple returned to Charles City and continued their devotion and dedication to community, church and family. Their lives were enriched by their vibrant Ferguson Street neighborhood. During his later years when the deaths of loved ones tore at Arnold, the community gave back and rallied his spirit. Arnold was one of the last of the "Greatest Generation", millions of Americans who were hardened by a depression and tested by a war, they devoted their lives to service and duty and did so with joy.

Living family members include two children; Marcia (Mark) Kogle of Puyallup, Wash. and Dennis (Janet) Haller of Decorah; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Ann Slye of Des Moines; and a brother, Gene (Carolyn) Haller of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Arlene on March 5, 2005; a son, Jerry Haller; and a brother-in-law, Donald Slye.

Memorials may be directed to Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 South Main Street, Charles City, IA 50616 or to YMCA of Charles City, 800 Hulin Street, Charles City, IA 50616.
