WILLIAM J. WATERS
Funeral services for William J. Waters, 69, of 1443 Vine St., who died early Friday afternoon while teaching a mathematics class at East High School, will be at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Grace Methodist Church. He died of a heart attack.
Dr. C.H. Pettersen, pastor, officiate. A committal service is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery at Rudd.
Friends may call at the Parrott & Wood Funeral Home from 10 a.m. today to 11 a.m. tomorrow and at the church tomorrow from noon to 8 p.m. The casket will not be open during or following the service.
A memorial is being established in his name at East High School where he had been a member of the faculty and coach since 1937.
He was born May 15, 1896, in Chicago and graduated from Oak Park High School and the then Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls.
Mr. Waters was an Army veteran of World War I.
His first marriage was to Velma Frank Aug. 26, 1928, at Nashua.
He came to Waterloo in 1936 and a year later joined the East High faculty.
He was head coach of baseball from 1942 to 1959, was head wrestling coach from 1943 to 1946, and served as assistant football coach from 1937 through 1948.
Mr. Waters was a member of Grace Methodist Church, Becker-Chapman Post of American Legion, Waterloo Education Association and Martin Lodge 105, AF&AM.
His first wife died in 1957. His second marriage was to Mrs. Vivian Artus Aug. 1, 1963, at Squaw Lake, Minn. She survives.
Other survivors are a son, James, of 204 Witry St.; a step-daughter, Miss Diane Artus, of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Mrs. Lila Langston, Glen Ellyn, Ill., and one grandchild.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one child, in infancy.
