Mary Joan Rithmiller Tector was born September 13, 1934, at Chicago, Ill., the daughter of John and Mary Frances (Morse) Rithmiller. She graduated from Maine Township in Park Ridge, Ill., and took nurses training at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. On August 27, 1955, she was united in marriage to Richard Tector at Park Ridge. They moved to Charles City in 1959.

Joan was employed at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital from 1959 to 1994 primarily in the Emergency Department, where she will be remembered for her loving care of others during their difficult times. She became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1957 and served as a full-time minister since 1960.

Joan loved teaching others the Bible and sharing her faith. She enjoyed her nursing profession and used her skills in the first-aid department at conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Kingdom Hall building projects throughout the years.

Joan and Dick loved their many travels with fellow Witnesses. They left a trail of friends worldwide, not the least of whom were their workmates in the Honduras.

Joan liked to play the piano and the organ and loved her garden. She was known for her tireless energy and always-ready hospitality, and her willingness to put the needs of others ahead of her own.

Joan will be very much missed by her husband, her family and many, many wonderful friends.

Living family members include her husband, Richard of Charles City; sister, Jean Wescott of Belle Haven, Va.; sister-in-law, Kitty Tector of Manitowoc, Wisc; and nieces and nephews, Kevin Tector, Denise Tector-Rutherford, Kariann Thon, Michelle Maclay Herndon and Nathaniel Wescott.
