[ Albert Cates of Marble Rock, Iowa, died November 26, 1918. He was born on December 29, 1846 in Indiana. ]

He was united in marriage with Mary Ann Nicholson, at Earlville, Iowa, February 1, 1871. To this union were born five children: Mabel, Mrs. George Lines and Ethel, Mrs. F. W. Bower of Marble Rock, Iowa; Arlie, of Charles City, Iowa; Margaret, Mrs. Melvin Bower, of Perrysville, Maryland and Cleland Cates of Marble Rock.

Of the original family that survive him are his brother, F. E. Cates of Earlville, Iowa; his twin brother Allen, who had been his faithful and constant associate through their life; sisters, Sylvia, Mrs. Seger, of Manchester, Iowa and Mrs. Hattie Rollins, of St. Paul, Minnesota. There are eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who will rise to revere his memory.

Mr. Cates' characteristics were fidelity and affection for his neighbors and jovial in conversation. During the winter of 1902-3 he wrestled with typhoid fever, his life was despaired of; however, after the anxious care and untiring attention of his faithful wife and companion, her own health weakened, he began to mend his way, physically, back to health.

His wife preceded him in death, in August 1906, and although he made the best of his surroundings, cheerful and jovial, yet he mourned his losses continually.

He loved his children, making his home with them. For nine of the last twelve years he had lived with his daughter, Ethel. On Tuesday evening, the end came, November 26th, 1918 - Aged 71 years, 10 months and 27 days.
