Donald W. Herman

Donald W. Herman, 80 of Charles City, Iowa, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center, Belle Plaine.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Inturnment will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Charles City. The Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

Don is survived by his son, Jeffrey W. Herman, of Charles City; two daughters, Cindy L. Reihman (Ron), of South Amana, and Deb I. Sanders (Phil), of Smyrna, Tenn.; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Davidson (Eric Jamaica), of Mason City, Lauren Brown, of Marengo, Austin Davidson, of South Amana, Ashley Kloster, of Charles City, Brittany Kloster, of Tennessee, Elijah Herman, of Charles City, and Johnny Sanders, of Smyrna, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Harvey and Howard Herman.

Donald W. Herman was born March 4, 1932, in Momence, Illinois, the son of Charles A. and Annie E. Bowers Herman. He received his GED in Metropolis, Illinois, and served in the U.S. Air Force. Donald married Sharon L. Dickhoff on February 8, 1958, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The couple later divorced.

Don was employed as a floor covering installer for many years. He enjoyed playing his guitar and was an avid reader of science journals. He was an adventurous man and loved taking long rides on his motorcycle. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast was his favorite restaurant meal. Don was a very generous man and was always willing and ready to help his family and friends.
