Kimberle Kathryn Shimek was born December 22, 1957, in Floyd County, the daughter of Cletus and Phyllis (Clark) Shimek. She received her education at Charles City. Kimberle contracted spinal meningitis as an infant with resultant special needs, yet she far exceeded medical expectations for quality of life and longevity. With courage and persistence and the love and support of her family, Kim did a remarkable job of remaining independent and living a fulfilling life.
She grew up in Charles City, later living in Clear Lake and Waverly. Kim worked at Opportunity Village as a classroom assistant for non-verbal clients. She loved to travel and have little adventures, feed birds and observe wildlife. She collected T-shirts and sweatshirts from her travels and enjoyed crafts, including rubber stamping and fabric painting. Kim had a special gift for laughing and winning hearts.
Living family members include her father, Cletus Shimek of Charles City; siblings, Marcia (Curtis) Groote of Rapid City, S.D., De Etta Shimek of Owatonna, Minn. and Gerry (Laura) Shimek of Cottage Grove, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Aaron Groote, Kiersten (Geoff) Sheehy, Brian (Kinsley) Groote, Sara Shimek, Rachael Shimek and Daniel Shimek; great-nieces and nephew; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and pets, Bubba and Mickey Marie.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
Memorials may be directed to Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, IA 50401.
