Daniel Bernard Merfeld – May 14, 1951 – March 2, 2006

STERLING, Ill. — Daniel B. Merfeld, 54, died Thursday (March 2, 2006) at his home in Sterling, Ill., after a long, courageous battle with cancer. ‘

Daniel B. Merfeld was born May 14, 1951, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Frances Kelly Merfeld. He married Janan Galloway in Roseville, Iowa, on Sept. 15, 1973. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling. Mr. Merfeld also was a member of the Iowa National Guard, serving as a medic.

He is survived by his wife, Janan, of Sterling; two daughters, Stephanie (Aaron) Anderson of Sterling and Stacy (Mario) Dillard of Morrison; three sisters, Kathy Troy of Rochester, Minn., Jean Merfeld of Waterloo, and Pat Weiss of Manchester; one brother, Pete Merfeld of Mason City; three grandchildren, Tyree Dillard, Gage Anderson and Madison Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of the resurrection of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling with the Rev. Paul White officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church, and Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schilling Funeral Home, 702 First Ave., Sterling. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established in his name.
