Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main, Rockford. Officiating will be the Rev. Bob Scheurer. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. at the church on Friday, and again one hour prior to services. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Violet Victoria Lien was born July 11, 1919, with her identical twin sister, Viola, to Albert and Mayme (Severtson) Davidson in Nevus, Minn. Her father was a carpenter and ran a hotel. She was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church in Nevus. The family later moved to a farm near Kiester, Minn. Vi went to country school near Kiester through the eighth grade.

Violet was married April 24, 1941, to her sweetheart Kenneth Lien at Lime Creek Lutheran Church near Emmons, Minnesota, one week before Ken left for the Army. She lived with her sister and family in Zanesville, Ohio, when Ken was in the army and worked at the Ball jar factory there.

After Ken was honorably discharged from the service, they lived in Lake Mills, later moving to Ute, and Northwood, Iowa, where Ken worked for the local newspapers.

In 1961 they bought the Rockford Register in Rockford, where Vi worked with Ken at the newspaper until their retirement.

In July of 2011 they moved to the Summit Heights Assisted Living and in January of 2012 they moved to the Nora Springs Care Center.

They enjoyed traveling with friends and family and had been in every state in the U.S.

Violet enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafting, woodcarving, square dancing, camping and going to casinos. She also enjoyed collecting owls in every size or shape and her owl collection grew to over 500.

She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford where she also enjoyed quilting and church circle. She was a member of the local craft club, square dance club, camping club and mother’s club. She was also a Cub Scout den mother.

She is survived by her husband, Ken, together three days short of 72 years; two daughters: Pam and David Meyer, Manly, Dee and Shawn Feltus, Rockford; three sons: Kevin and JoAnna Lien, Hanlontown, Todd and Janette Lien and Eric and Judy Lien, Rockford; grandchildren, Betsy and Jeff Fliger, Ankeny, Brad and Rachel Meyer, Manly, RaNae and Aaron Anderson, Forest City, April and Josh Eggers, Stone City, Krystal Lien and Jared TeBrockhorst , Cedar Rapids, Nathan and Susan Lien, St. Charles, Minn., Megan Lien, Rockford, Amber and Brian Jacobs, Alden, Minn., Montica and Jake Foxen, Parkersburg, Jayson and Jenn Speakar, Floyd; three sisters-in-law: Eilene Davidson, Kay and Jim Lester and Dorothy Lien; 24 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son; grandson, Thomas Lynn Lien; her parents; four sisters and their spouses: Rhyna and Charles Barnes, Gladys and Earl Pritchett, Viola and Gilman Turvold and Myrtle and Ansel Jacobson; three brothers: Clifford ( Lucille) Davidson, Keith Davidson, and Lloyd Davidson; Ken’s brothers, sister and their spouses, Agnes and Elmer Johnson, Melvin and Marg Lien, Orvil and Galya Lien, Stanley and Ester Lien, “Ace” Evenson; and several nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank the wonderful staff at the care center who took such good care of Vi and thank you to Dave, Katie and Pastor Janet from Hospice for their care and support.

NOTES:

Violet Victoria (Davidson) Lien was born July 11, 1919 in Freeborn County, Minnesota, the daughter of Albert A. Davidson and Mayme (Severtson) Davidson.

She married Kenneth B. Lien. Public records show his birth date as April 1, 1919 and living in Rockford with Violet.
