Born Evelyn Ruth, the daughter of Clarence B. and Ruth S. “Keller” Montgomery on Sept. 16, 1926, on a farm in rural Bremer County near Waverly, Iowa, she is the last of four children. She graduated with the class of 1946 from Waverly High School. She first was employed as a waitress at Roy’s Place in Waverly but then went on a blind date and soon fell in love with her future husband, Warren. They met during the war while he was on leave and corresponded over the next several years until his discharge. They were united in marriage on August 11, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union was born two sons. For all of her life they were residents of Charles City except for two years when they were in Wisconsin.

Evelyn was employed in the payroll department of the Oliver plant, as a desk clerk at the Lamplighter Motel and finished her careers in 1989 from Kmart, after eleven years working there. Evelyn was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she also taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of Trinity Shepherds and the UMW. She also served as a Den Mother for her son’s Cub Scout troop and was a caregiver for many children.

Evelyn and Warren loved to travel and some of their favorite places were Lake Pepin, Minnesota, Colorado, and several trips to Tucson, Arizona, to visit with their son while he lived there. She loved music and played the accordion in her early years, did handwork, and made religious bookmarks. Being a cancer survivor she was often a worker and participant in the Relay for Life.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Warren, just three short months of their 67th anniversary. She also leaves behind her two sons, Jerald and his wife Marlene of Nashua, and Allan and his wife Patricia of Golden Valley, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Jaclyn Nott, Erin Nott, Josefina Nott, Michael Nott, Esperanza Nott, Brent Brunner, Alissa (Darren) Pfannebecker and Jared (Valerie) Brunner; nine great-grandchildren, Alma, Ciara, Alan, Hana, Ava, Ian, Mason, Dylon and Emmylou.

Her parents, an infant sister, her sister Eleanor Baumgartner and brother Eldon Montgomery preceded Evelyn in death.
