Funeral services were held Thursday, March 7, 1985, in St. John Lutheran Church at Charles City, Iowa, for Spencer M. Thomas, 20, of Sheffield, Iowa; his father, Terry N. Thomas, 46, of Barlesville, Oklahoma, and his grandfather Vernon (Barney) Thomas, 64, of Floyd, Iowa. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. The three men were killed in an airplane crash northwest of Cedar Rapids on Sunday, March 3, 1985.

Spencer M. Thomas was born on February 6, 1965 to Terry and Mary Kleckner Thomas at Osage, Iowa, and was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Waterloo, Iowa. He attended school in Charles City until 1972 when the family moved to the Swaledale area. he was a 1983 graduate of Rockwell-Swaledale Community School.

Spencer was the 1982 homecoming king and a student speaker at his commencement. Spencer was granted the Enan Verle Zeidler Award. During the summer he was employed by the Fred Carlson Construction Co. of Decorah. In the fall of 1983 Spencer enrolled at the University of Iowa, majoring in business. This past January Spencer obtained his solo pilot's license.

Survivors include his mother, Mary A. Thomas of Sheffield; a sister, Lezlie Ann Thomas of Stillwater, Oklahoma, maternal grandmother, Mrs. Agnes Kleckner of Rockwell; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Betty Thomas of Charles City and many relatives and friends.
