Henry W. Gast was born March 4, 1837, at Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany to David Gast and Anna Margarette Dela Gast. His parents and their family left Germany and emigrated to Canada, then moved south to settle at Allamakee County, Iowa in 1858.

Henry married Katherine Adeline Gildner on July 3, 1857 at Linton, Allamakee, Iowa. The couple had 5 children (all born at Linton, Allamakee, Iowa):
Mary (1861 -1979 Floyd, IA);
Henry (November 23, 1863 - May 15, 1937 Hampton, Franklin, Iowa);
William (1866 - 1975 Iowa);
George (September 29, 1868 - May 13, 1943 Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa) and
Mathilda E. (March 17, 1871 - December 22, 1894 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa).
The couple divorced.

Henry next married Alvina Decklever (Mogk) in 1887 or 1888. They had 6 children (all born at Rock Grove, Floyd, Iowa):
Lucinda (October 1888-1954);
William (1890-1931);
Emma A (1891-1912 Floyd, IA);
Edward (May 13 1894 - November 28, 1956 Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa);
Harold Carl (November 20, 1896-December 17, 1956 Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa) and
Rudolph (August 30, 1898 - May 3, 1899 Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa).

Henry became a naturalized citizen on October 29, 1860 at age 23 years at Northern Illinois court. Says he lived near Waukon, Allamakee, Iowa.

He fought in the Civil War for the Union Side of the fight. He was living at Rossville, IA and enlisted August 17, 1862 as a private for the state of Iowa in Company I, Iowa 27th Infantry Regiment on September 5, 1862. Promoted to Full 6th Corporal on July 28, 1864. Promoted to Full Private on March 26, 1865. Mustered out on August 8, 1865 at Clinton, Iowa. He survived.

His occupation was that of a farmer.

Henry W. Gast died September 27, ​1911 at Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa and was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, Floyd, Iowa.

1885: Henry Gast 46, Catharine Gast 51, Henry Gast 22, George Gast 15, Matildy Gast 12. 1895: Henry Gast age 56.

1900: Henry Yast 63, Elvina Yast 36 (says Elvina is wife, born October 1863 Germany, couple married 1888, she has had 6 children, 5 are living), Lucinda Yast 11, Willie Yast 10, Emma Yast 8, Edward Yast 6, Carl Yast 4. (Says Henry was born January 1837)

1910: Alma (should be Henry W) Gast 74, Alvina A Gast 47, Emma Gast 18, Carl H Gast 14. (says Alvina had 7 children, 5 living).
