MASON CITY Gene Crowell, 78, of 380 Yorktown Pike, died Wednesday (Nov. 25, 1998) at his residence.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Nov. 28, 1998 at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. Military rites will be performed by the Walker-Graper Post, American Legion. Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. today at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W Main, Rockford.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Gene Crowell Memorial Fund.Gene was born on June 15, 1920, the son of John and Mae (Leaman) Crowell, on a farm in rural Rockford. He attended and graduated from Rockford High School in 1938.
As a young man he served his country in the United States Army, 347th Infantry Regiment. While in the Army, Gene was very honored to reach the rank of captain. Gene earned several honors and commendations, including the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, American Defense Service Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon with three Bronze Stars.
During his tour he came home to be united in marriage to Mary Engels in Rockford on January 13, 1943. After farming for 24 years, Gene went to work for White Farm Equipment Manufacturing in Charles City as an inspector.
Soon after Gene and Mary celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, Mary suddenly died.
On July 5, 1975, Gene was united in marriage to his second wife, Jean (O'Harrow) Kuhlemeier in Rudd. The couple resided in Rockford until a little over a year ago when they moved to Mason City.
Gene was very active and had a zest for life, living it to the fullest. He loved being outdoors, and playing golf. He spent his time enjoying his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, dancing, and playing cards. Gene was the most accommodating and helpful person anyone could ever meet.
Gene was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford, the secretary of the Riverside Cemetery Association for many years, member of the Walker-Graper Post, American Legion, Rockford, and was kept busy working for Schumburg Funeral Home in his spare time.
Those thankful for having shared Gene's life include his wife, Jean, of Mason City; four daughters, Linda Staudt, of Marble Rock; Jan and her husband, Bob Wood, of Rudd, Sandy and her husband, Roger Holden, of Manly, and Mary Ann and her husband, Mike Schweizer, of Mason City; three stepdaughters, Linda Riel and her special friend, Larry Sesker, of Des Moines, Nancy and her husband, Rich LaCoste, of Mason City, and Sue and her husband, Tom Batty, of St. Charles, Minn.; one stepson, Tony and his wife, Donna Kuhlemeier, of Rudd; two sisters, Gertrude Murray, of Walker, Minn., and Norma Lines, of Nashua; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Crowell, of Osage; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary (Engels) Crowell in 1973; one sister, Gwendolyn Palmer; two brothers, Glenn and Francis; two sons-in-law, Vincent Staudt and Jack Curley; and one great-granddaughter, Stephanie Kutschat.
