Donald "Don" Merry, 78, of Charles City, entered his eternal rest on January 3, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Memorial services for Don Merry will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Forrest Cornelius will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.

Donald LeVern Merry was born September 14, 1934, at Storm Lake the son of Donald and Joyce (Teachout) Merry. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1952, attended Buena Vista College and later received his Bachelor's Degree from Iowa State University. Don proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On June 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to Martha Wells. Don was a pioneering researcher in rabies vaccines. During his career the family moved to Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and back to Iowa, through it all Don remained an Iowa boy at heart. He was a member of the First Congregational Church where he has served as trustee, Floyd County Historical Society and the American Society for Microbiology. Don loved wildlife and the outdoors and was an advocate for various organizations. He also volunteered for different community and church groups no matter where he was living.

Living family members include his loving wife of 57 years, Martha Merry of Charles City; four children, Pamela (Patrick) Fendt and Elizabeth (Christopher Schmit) Merry both of Milwaukee, Wis., Michael (Pam) Merry of Owatonna, Minn. and Mitchell Merry of Washington D.C.; ten grandchildren, Thomas, Geena and William Fendt, Chloe and Peter George, Scott and Ashley Louks, Tony, Adam and Alexandra Schmit; two brothers, Ray Merry of Lyons, Colo. and Tom Merry of Denver, Colo; and a sister, Susan (Don) Vinicor of Fresno, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Eric Louks.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church, 502 North Jackson Street, Charles City, IA 50616.
