Funeral services for Merle Crooks will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Merle Marie Marvin Crooks was born January 6, 1922, at Riceville, the daughter of Walter and Pearl (Emery) Marvin. She graduated from the school at Orchard. On December 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to George Crooks at Charles City. Merle worked for several years at the New Hampton Care Center. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Merle enjoyed going to Flea Markets with her daughter-in-law Elaine, gardening, planting flowers and spending time with family, friends and her cat Sadie. Merle always looked forward to sharing her life with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Living family members include four children, Judy (Glenn) Balsely of Clarksville, Barbara (Ray) Boyer of Charles City, Valerie (Edward) Stolfus of Sumner, and Eugene (Teresa) Crooks of Rapid City, S.D.; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Crooks of Charles City; eight grandchildren, Rhonda (Phil) Jones, Melvin (Karen) Balsley, Deanne (Kyle) Jolly, Sonja (Brad) Lampe, Melody (Teresa) Stolfus, Justin (Amy) Stolfus, Travis (Angie) Crooks and Jenni Crooks; three step grandchildren, Cory (Ashley) Knowles, Jeremy, (Mandy) Knowles and Jennifer (Trevor) Niebuhr; 14 great grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Pitz of Rockwell and Dorothy Simpson of St. Ansgar; and two brothers, Keith Marvin of Charles City and Leslie Marvin of Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George on December 17, 1998; two sons, Gary Crooks on February 4, 2000 and Dennis Crooks in infancy; two sisters, Rosela Crooks and Lucille Crooks; and three brothers, Robert Marvin, Dale Marvin and Lester Marvin.
